Winter and Summer

He was only visiting, for a couple weeks
So many clouds, and even the peaks
Were shrouded in mist-
That town on the cape was cold-
He was told it was unusually so
That the warmth he had just missed.

Was it like him
To land in a place at the worst of times-
Seasons change fast, when going by plane-
Was this the holiday he opted for-
He wouldn’t want to waste it, but
He was only visiting, he said when it would rain.

Everyone it seemed was rushing on
To glance only briefly at the sunset-
They called it a dark continent-
Yet when the sun sets at one end
We know that it rises at the other-
Though gray the outset, he was content.

There were days in that town
When the clouds rolled back-
Gold turned black, and back again-
The coloured prospered there-
One can find the blooms in any season-
He was only visiting, along with a friend.

And joys abound where life is shared-
He found God’s people also there
Family closer than blood-
A small flock grazed, tended with care
A bouquet of color in a small white vase-
And in that place he saw Spring’s bud.

The Word on her lap and the sun on her face-
Her name was beautiful, her body full of grace
She sat alone, her eyes intent-
Where water flows and the living grows-
In that house, good hope was found
His courage too, he thought was spent.

He was only visiting, but he’ll never forget
That town on the cape-
And now, hope – hope still, hope on
and pray in every season.
